Long, long ago, India was ruled by people from another country — a place far away called Britain. The British had come to trade but slowly took control of all of India. Many brave Indian men and women — called freedom fighters — decided this was not right. They fought very hard (some without any weapons at all!) so that India could rule itself. On 15th August 1947, India finally became FREE! We got to choose our own leaders and make our own rules. That's why every year we celebrate on August 15 — to say THANK YOU to all the heroes who made India free! In 2026, India turns 80 years free. That's like a grandparent's age!
Before 1947, Britain governed India. Our freedom fighters worked peacefully — and bravely — to change that.
At the stroke of midnight on 14–15 August 1947, Jawaharlal Nehru gave his famous "Tryst with Destiny" speech. India was free!
We celebrate to honour every freedom fighter's sacrifice and to remind ourselves that freedom is a precious gift we must protect.

This year — 2026 — marks 80 glorious years of India's independence. Our country was born on 15th August 1947 at the stroke of midnight, when Jawaharlal Nehru gave his immortal "Tryst with Destiny" speech. In 79 years, India has become a world leader in science, technology, space, education, and culture. India is home to 140 crore people — one of the largest and most diverse families on Earth. Our children are the future of this great nation.
Making things with their hands is how young children learn and celebrate. These activities are safe, fun, and meaningful for ages 2–6!
White A4 paper, orange/saffron and green watercolours or crayons, a blue sketch pen, a stick.
Draw two horizontal lines to divide the paper into three equal parts. Colour the top third saffron, leave the middle white, colour the bottom green. Draw the Ashoka Chakra with a blue pen in the middle. Attach to a stick. Wave your Tiranga!

Colour sections of the crown strip in saffron, white, and green. Write 'Jai Hind!' or stick star stickers on it. Fit it to the child's head and staple. Your tiny patriot is ready!

Help your child make three handprints side by side — one saffron, one white, one green. Let it dry. Draw the Ashoka Chakra in the middle. Write your child's name and '80th Independence Day 2026' below it. Frame it!

Independence Day for kids is the celebration of India becoming free from British rule on August 15, 1947. For children, it is a day of flag hoisting, patriotic songs, speeches, fancy dress activities, and learning about the brave freedom fighters who won India's freedom. Schools can make it meaningful and fun through: flag hoisting ceremonies with age-appropriate explanations, patriotic songs and rhymes, simple fancy dress events, colouring sheets of the national flag or map, short storytelling about freedom fighters, making paper flags or crafts, and a special snack in tricolour (saffron ladoo / white coconut barfi / green chutney!). Keep the format short — about 45 minutes total — because young children remember warmth and pride far better than long speeches.
